Essential Oils for Travel: Staying Well in the Air and Beyond

Travel can be exciting, but it also comes with challenges like disrupted sleep, unfamiliar food and long hours in recycled cabin air. Over the years, I’ve created a simple travel essentials kit that keeps me feeling fresh, calm and protected on the go. Everything fits into a small zip-up bag that comes with me each time I leave my seat.

Here are some of my favourite ways I use essential oils while travelling:

Freshen up naturally

  • Toothbrush + Thieves: I add a drop of Thieves oil to my toothbrush. It freshens my breath and supports oral health without carrying toothpaste tubes. Lemon or peppermint can also work beautifully.
  • Thieves oil on the neck: One drop on the sides of my neck helps me feel protected. If it feels strong, dilute with a carrier oil.

Support rest and relaxation

  • Lavender: Just a drop under each arm helps keep me fresh while also relaxing my body, which is perfect when you are trying to get some sleep on a plane.
  • Travel sleep allies: Oils like Stress Away, Peace & Calming, and Lavender help settle into a new bed or adjust when crossing time zones.

Stay clean and protected

  • Thieves hand soap: I refill a small spray bottle so I have my own safe, non-toxic soap. No need for the harsh public restroom versions.
  • Thieves spray: After washing, I use this to dry my hands quickly and get extra cleansing power. Skip the hand dryers, which spread germs.

Travel immune support

  • Raindrop Technique oils: These are an absolute must. When travelling, I often apply them to my feet for grounding and immune support. I also pack ImmuPower for an extra boost.
  • Thieves again: This blend is always with me, not only for immune support but also for cleansing the hotel room. A diffuser like the Dewdrop is perfect for travel.

Comfort for digestion

  • DiGize: This is non-negotiable when flying. Travel often means new foods, unusual meal times and extra stress. A drop of DiGize can be the support your digestion needs.

Oils for emotional balance

Travel is not only physical, it’s emotional. I always bring oils that support my energy and mindset:

  • Highest Potential: To help me stay focused on where I am going and why.
  • Gratitude: A gentle reminder to appreciate the journey and the people I meet.
  • Abundance: This oil always travels with me, opening space for positive opportunities along the way.

A little extra tip

If you’re new to natural travel care, consider bringing a simple nasal spray with xylitol (I like X-Clear). It keeps the nasal passages balanced and resilient, especially on long flights.

And remember, you can bring your oils in your cabin bag. Each bottle is well under the 100ml rule, and you’re allowed up to a litre in total. I prefer to keep them with me so I know they are safe from heat or cold in the luggage hold.

Bringing it all together

Essential oils have completely transformed how I travel. From staying healthy to sleeping well and even feeling emotionally balanced, they make the journey smoother and more enjoyable.
